Drive in Basra by Iraqi Army Makes Gains
By Stephen Farrell and Ammar Karim
May 12, 2008
Excerpt: "Yet traces of the old order remain. One wall in central Basra still bore the unsigned scrawl: 'We warn girls not to put on makeup and to wear scarves. Anyone who does not follow these orders will be killed.'"

The Iraqi flag at www.mnf-iraq.com

Three equal horizontal bands of red (top), white,(middle) and black (bottom) with the phrase ALLAHU AKBAR (God is Great) in green Arabic Kufic script in a horizontal line centered in the white band.

The flag was modified by the Iraqi Council of Representatives in January 2008 from a similar form that had three stars on all sides of “Allahu Akbar” which was said to have been scripted in Saddam Hussein’s handwriting. The stars were eliminated and script changed in 2008 to address the concerns of Iraqis that refused to fly a flag symbolizing the regime of Saddam Hussein.

Previous changes to the flag had been in January 1991 during the Persian Gulf Crisis when the script was added to the three stripes with three stars in the middle white stripe. The flag of Iraq is similar to: the flag of Syria, which has two stars but no script, Yemen, which has a plain white band, and Egypt, which has a gold Eagle of Saladin centered in the white band. The basic design is based upon the Arab Liberation colors.

U. S. Senate Global Poverty Act
Obama bill: $845 billion more for global poverty. Democrat sponsors act OK'd by Senate panel that would cost 0.7% of gross national product.

Obama’s Global Tax Proposal Up for Senate Vote: AIM Column, By Cliff Kincaid, February 12, 2008: "Jeffrey Sachs, who runs the U.N.'s 'Millennium Project," says that the U.N. plan to force the U.S. to pay 0.7 percent of GNP in increased foreign aid spending would add $65 billion a year to what the U.S. already spends. Over a 13-year period, from 2002, when the U.N.'s Financing for Development conference was held, to the target year of 2015, when the U.S. is expected to meet the "Millennium Development Goals," this amounts to $845 billion. And the only way to raise that kind of money, Sachs has written, is through a global tax, preferably on carbon-emitting fossil fuels.'"

Undoing America's Ethanol Mistake
By Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson
April 28, 2008
"The International Food Policy Research Institute estimates that biofuel production accounts for between one-quarter and one-third of the recent spike in global commodity prices... As a recent Time cover story pointed out, biofuel mandates increase greenhouse gasses and create incentives for global deforestation."

The Clean Energy Scam

By Michael Grunwald
March 27, 2008

"But several new studies show the biofuel boom is doing exactly the opposite of what its proponents intended: it's dramatically accelerating global warming, imperiling the planet in the name of saving it. Corn ethanol, always environmentally suspect, turns out to be environmentally disastrous. Even cellulosic ethanol made from switchgrass, which has been promoted by eco-activists and eco-investors as well as by President Bush as the fuel of the future, looks less green than oil-derived gasoline."

New York Sun April 15, 2008: The Journal story quoted India's Finance Minister, Palaniappan Chidambaram, as saying, "When millions of people are going hungry, it's a crime against humanity that food should be diverted to biofuels."

April 16, 2008: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has warned the growing global food crisis has reached emergency proportions... Several causes factor into the global food price hike, many linked to human activity. These include human-driven climate change, the soaring cost of oil and a Western-led focus on biofuels that critics say turns food into fuel.

Gulf of Mexico saturated with oil?
Excerpt: "Earlier this year (2006), Cuba announced plans to hire the communist Chinese to drill for oil off Key West, Fla. The move was made possible by the 1977 agreement under President Jimmy Carter that created for Cuba an "Exclusive Economic Zone" extending from the western tip of Cuba to the north, virtually to Key West."

Alaskans Revisit Old Issue With New Arguments
By Lee Dye, Juneau, Alaska, February 22, 2008
"(Alaska Governor Tony) Knowles is a Democrat, but a Yale fraternity brother of President Bush, who has made opening (drilling for oil) the refuge a cornerstone of his administration's energy program. Alaska's two U.S. senators and lone congressman are Republicans with key committee assignments, and all strongly support oil development in the reserve. Most Alaskans do too, according to several polls."

Second Amendment Right to Bear Arms

Decision expected in June of 2008.

Summary at Wikipedia and other suggested reading.

Christian Science Monitor: In agreeing to take up the Heller case, the court rejected questions posed by both sides in the litigation and wrote its own question. The question: "Whether the following provisions [three sections of the D.C. gun law] violate the Second Amendment rights of individuals who are not affiliated with any state-regulated militia, but who wish to keep handguns and other firearms for private use in their homes?"
