Nick Barbara and Jessica Kaufman pace Dover Cross Country at Section One Championships

Jessica Kaufman and Nick Barbara led the Dragons to very respectable finishes last Saturday at Bowdoin Park, with Kaufman placing 21st and Barbara 23rd at the Section One Championships/State Qualifier Meet.
The performances of all the Dragon Girls and Dragon Boys capped off an outstanding season of strong development in the very young Cross Country Program at Dover High School.
Head coach Matt Poll and assistant coach Patrick Healy are proud of the dedicated work done by the Dragons this season, and the season highlights that demonstrate the remarkable progress of this team. With the addition of Track & Field at Dover High School, the improvement will be accelerated, and these pioneers will be able to look back on how they established Dover as a running power in Section One.
Coach Matt Pool reflected on his very outstanding team and the very successful season when he told the Harlem Valley Herald, “Our cross country program is in its fourth year. The second place finish at League Championship for both the boys and girls is the best finish in team history.
“For the girls we had a complete team, which is something to build on for the future, and Jessica Kaufman placed 21st at Section One Championships.
“The boys ran well despite starting the season off very slow. We ran well at JFK, Leagues, Coaches, and especially Section One Championships.
My freshmen ran very well all year with Corey Woodin being in my top seven from JFK. Cody Orton ran to a second place finish at JFK and an impressive 3rd place finish at Brewster, both were freshmen races. He was part of the top seven since League championships. Both freshmen were important parts of the team.
“Nick Barbara finished his fourth year on the team as our number one runner.
“For both the boys and girls of the 19 Dover Athletes that ran at the Section One Championships at Bowdoin Park on Saturday, 18 of them either had a course PR for Bowdoin or a season PR (PR=Personal Record). Even though the boys’ finish was a disappointment, losing out on fifth place by just two points, it is impressive for our team to have five boys break 20:00 in that race.”
