U. S. Senate Global Poverty Act
Obama bill: $845 billion more for global poverty. Democrat sponsors act OK'd by Senate panel that would cost 0.7% of gross national product.
Obama’s Global Tax Proposal Up for Senate Vote: AIM Column, By Cliff Kincaid, February 12, 2008: "Jeffrey Sachs, who runs the U.N.'s 'Millennium Project," says that the U.N. plan to force the U.S. to pay 0.7 percent of GNP in increased foreign aid spending would add $65 billion a year to what the U.S. already spends. Over a 13-year period, from 2002, when the U.N.'s Financing for Development conference was held, to the target year of 2015, when the U.S. is expected to meet the "Millennium Development Goals," this amounts to $845 billion. And the only way to raise that kind of money, Sachs has written, is through a global tax, preferably on carbon-emitting fossil fuels.'"
Placed on Senate Calendar on April 24, 2008
S. 2433: Global Poverty Act of 2007:
"Last action: April 24, 2008: Placed on Senate Legislative Calendar under General Orders. Calendar 718... Sponsor: Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL)." |
Undoing America's Ethanol Mistake
By Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson April 28, 2008
"The International Food Policy Research Institute estimates that biofuel production accounts for between one-quarter and one-third of the recent spike in global commodity prices... As a recent Time cover story pointed out, biofuel mandates increase greenhouse gasses and create incentives for global deforestation."

Gulf of Mexico saturated with oil?
Excerpt: "Earlier this year (2006), Cuba announced plans to hire the communist Chinese to drill for oil off Key West, Fla. The move was made possible by the 1977 agreement under President Jimmy Carter that created for Cuba an "Exclusive Economic Zone" extending from the western tip of Cuba to the north, virtually to Key West."

Sherman Chamber Ensemble April 26
The Sephardic tradition blends the ritual music of the medieval Jewish communities of Spain and Portugal with the influences of the Mediterranean regions such as North Africa, Turkey and Greece to which they were exiled in the 17th and 18th centuries, along with elements of Western European Baroque and Classical music. The result is a vocal and instrumental repertoire that is deeply spiritual while still expressing rhythmic vitality and melodic tenderness. |

1987 & 2008 World Stock Market Declines
1987 Dow Jones Below $3,000
2008 Dow Jones Above $14,000
Stock markets in the United States and around the world are falling precipitously, causing huge losses of capital.
October 19, 1987, known as Black Monday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average "lost 22.6% of its value or $500 billion dollars" (http://www.stock-market-crash.net/1987.htm).
The Dow Jones was never above $3,000 during or prior to 1987.
In 2008, the Dow Jones rose to above $14,000, and during this correction, it is now around $12,000.

AP January 10, 2008: WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) -- Disgraced Olympian Marion Jones, whose speed and smile made her an international superstar until steroid use led to her downfall, was sentenced Friday to six months in prison for lying to investigators about performance-enhancing drugs and a check-fraud scam.
Opinion:
ENOUGH ALREADY !!! Marion Jones should not be incarcerated. She has already lost her medals and her reputation, her home and property and money, and much of her ability to raise money. She is going to jail for what she said to investigators, not for her use of performance enhancing drugs. How many of us get away with lying every day, in and out of court... and she wasn't in court when she "lied" to investigators. And be afraid, be very afraid, if "investigators" come to you for statements. Ask Martha Stewart, where there was no underlying crime. When you are faced with the all-powerful "investigators", you have no 5th Amendment rights, and no attorney... they have all the power, and if you come under the glare of their headlights, you apparently have total liability and no defense.

Election 2008
Are Republicans being able to choose the delegates to the 2008 Republican National Convention?
By John M. Benson
January 10, 2008
The election results are being severely skewed by the process rules for caucuses and primaries in the various states.
As in the Iowa Caucuses and the New Hampshire Primary, non-Republicans are allowed to vote in the Republican Primary in Michigan next Tuesday, January 15.
Mitt Romney leads the Republican candidates in delegates with 24, and he has won the Republican vote in Wyoming and Iowa.
John McCain won the vote among Republicans in New Hampshire.
In defiance of these facts, the pundits keep asking whether Romney can survive the early losses.
Of course, Fred Thompson gets no exposure from those pundits.
Did you even know that Wyoming held its Republican Caucus on Saturday, January 5, 2008?
Michigan allows the same cross-over voting, where Hillary Clinton is the only top-tier candidate on the Democratic Party ballot, and where the Democratic National Committee has threatened to deny the delegates their seating at the Democratic National Convention.
From Michal Luo on his blog The Caucus in the New York Times on December 10, 2008:
"Although Mr. Romney will be drawing on the fact that he was born and reared in Michigan and his father was a popular three-term governor, independents and Democrats who are unenthused by an essentially uncontested Democratic contest on the same day could potentially be decisive by moving over to vote for Mr. McCain."

Article in the Washington Post concerning the Michigan Democratic Ballot:
Voters Face Confusion in Michigan Dem Race
Excerpt:
Updated 6:37 p.m.
By Peter Slevin
CHICAGO -- Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton is the only top-tier Democrat on the Jan. 15 Michigan primary ballot, but followers of her chief rivals are hoping to wound her all the same.
A fresh poll suggests that running nearly unopposed will not mean winning nearly 100 percent of the vote.
The campaigns of Sen. Barack Obama and former senator John Edwards are urging their supporters to cast ballots for "uncommitted," according to state Democratic party chairman Mark Brewer. The Obama campaign says there may be "grass-roots efforts," but that the Chicago-based campaign is not involved.
If "uncommitted" receives at least 15 percent in a congressional district or statewide, Brewer said, delegates will be sent to Denver where any candidate -- including Clinton -- can compete for them.

5thGradeAtPCMS.mp3
Podcasting from Pawling Middle School
Sixteen Pawling Middle School students, their parents and teachers presented their recent Podcast to the PCSD School Board at Monday night's board meeting. For those of you unfamiliar with the term Podcast, it is an mp3 sound file which is created in the format of a talk radio show. It can be listened to on a computer, iPod or mp3 player. If the file is transferred to an audio CD, it can be listened to on a CD player as well.
The title of the Podcast was "Welcome To 5th Grade". It was created in June of this year by Mrs. Sawotka's 5th grade class. The transition from elementary school to middle school can cause some apprehension for the students. So, Mrs. Sawotka and her class created the Podcast so last year's 5th graders could offer some advice to the incoming 5th graders. The Podcast was posted on Mrs Sawotka's eboard as well as the Pawling School District website. Incoming 5th graders could either listen to the Podcast on their computer or download it to their iPod or mp3 player.
Complete with appropriate sound effects, the students offered their words of wisdom on the areas of waking up earlier, lockers, AB days, getting to your next class, school clubs and trips, etc. They rounded out their Podcast with a few school related jokes.
Pawling CSD Technology Coordinator Joan Roberts helped the students with the technical end of the creation of the podcast; recording their voices, helping them to find appropriate sound effects and inserting them, and locating "podsafe" music. Mrs Roberts explained to the board that the podcast was created very inexpensively with a laptop, a $10.00 microphone, the Open Source (FREE) software program Audacity, Free sound effects and some podsafe music.
Mrs. Sawotka and Mrs. Schmidt helped the students organize their ideas and helped them to storyboard and then script their podcast. As this was also a writing project the students wrote their scripts.
During the board meeting, the students were introduced to the board, the board listened to the Podcast and then the students answered questions from the board.
Mrs. Roberts also mentioned to the board that they hope to post many Podcasts this year as other schools have done. In the spirit of Edward R. Murrow, it seems appropriate that our students report on what they are learning at school. |
