Howard Ettinger, 97, a resident of Poughkeepsie, NY, passed away Sunday, March 30, 2008 at the Eden Park Nursing Home, Poughkeepsie, NY.
Son of Charles and Anna (Henneforth) Ettinger, he was born in Honesdale, PA on July 22, 1910. Mr. Ettinger was a WWII US Army veteran, participating in the invasions of the Phillipines and Okinawa.
Mr. Ettinger married the former Edna Gahn on June 26, 1940 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Scranton, PA and they were married for 41 happy years. They lived in Dover Plains, NY for over 20 years before moving to Poughkeepsie to live with their daughter Nancy. He is predeceased by his wife.
He worked as a car repairer for the Erie Railroad in Dunmore, PA, and later retired from Tri-Wall Containers in Wassaic, NY in 1975.
Mr. Ettinger enjoyed traveling extensively with his daughter, Nancy, around the United States, England, and most of Europe.
He was a charter member of the Lutheran Church of Christ the King , Pawling, NY.
Survivors include his daughter, Nancy Ettinger of Poughkeepsie, NY; brother Ralph Ettinger and his wife, Blanche and family of Cantonsville, MD; sister-in-law, Marie Ettinger and family of Moscow, PA; nieces and nephews, Mr. & Mrs. Anthony Wolfe and family of Scranton, PA, Mr. & Mrs. Roy Hopkins and family of Clark Summit, PA, and Mr. & Mrs. Harold Bowers and family of Scranton, PA; numerous other nieces and nephews; and good friends Mr. & Mrs. James Kelley and family of Pleasant Valley, NY.
He is predeceased by three brothers and a sister.
Friends may call at the Horn & Thomes, Inc Funeral Home, 83 East Main Street, Pawling, NY Thursday 2-4 and 6-9 PM.
A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, April 4th at 11 AM at the Lutheran Church of Christ the King, Pawling, NY. Burial will follow in South Dover Cemetery, Wingdale, NY.
