The Pawling Tiger tennis team finished the 2007 season in grand style with a dominating 4-1 win over Peekskill at home at Lakeside Park.

Devon Gulbrandsen plays first singles for Pawling, and she has played outstanding tennis all season for new head coach Ray Konchalski. Playing the top player from each opponent in her freshman season, she has shown that she will be a force to be reckoned in the section as she becomes an upperclassman and grows into her magnificent talent.

Gulbrandsen split the two sets 4-6, 6-4 in her match with Peekskill, forcing the tie breaker, and pressed that all the way to 12-14, playing with the indomitable spirit that will carry to her to the top of the section over the next three years.

Coach Ray Konchalski said after the match, “Congratulations to Sarah Gulbrandsen and Kristen McNamara for winning their final tennis match of the season against Peekskill High School. Sarah and Kristen were undefeated as the first doubles team this year.

“The team won four of the five matches against Peekskill High School. The only loss went to a third set tie breaker where Peekskill prevailed 6-4, 4-6, 14-12.

“The team will miss the seniors Kate Demetri, Sara Yurt and Katie Rosaschi.”

Seniors Sara Yurt and Katie Rosaschi were spectacular in their final match for Pawling.

Sara Yurt nearly swept her match, winning 6-0, 6-2 in a dominating performance that capped an outstanding varsity career.

Katie Rosaschi played a full and challenging match, winning 7-5, 6-4, and showing she has become a very fine tennis player in her time on the Pawling varsity.

Jenny Sosiewicz and Katie Demetri won 6-0, 6-4. Demetri excelled in her final match for Pawling, and Sosiewicz has set a high standard for the rest of her career at Pawling.

Christine O’Neill, Georgia Costigan and Courtney Sypher completed their season with the Tigers playing exhibition matches. They have shown very good promise, and if they choose to work on their games in the off-season, they can make great contributions to the Pawling varsity in the future.
