The Pawling varsity tennis team continues to pound on the door of a winning streak, falling just a few points short in matches where the only single point is awarded to the winning side.
The Tigers are working very hard for first-year coach Ray Konchalski, who is doing an outstanding job of developing the players’ fundamentals and game management skills.
“Jenny Sosiewicz and Katie Demetri remain undefeated in girls’ tennis doubles competition,” Konschalski said after the team hosted Walter Panas this week on September 19.
Five points are awarded for each of five individual matches in the team match scoring. There are three singles matches and two doubles matches, each of which is worth one point, for a total of five points in the team match.
As Konchalski reported after the match, “Pawling High School and Walter Panas High School needed three super 10-point set tiebreakers to determine the overall winner of the match. When the sets are tied at one all, the super tiebreaker is used to determine the third and deciding set. In the tiebreaker the first team to reach 10 points and lead by at least two points is the winner. Walter Panas won two of the three giving them 4 of the 5 matches.
Playing First Singles, Devon Gulbrandsen fought her way back to win the second set at 6-4, and lost by just 10-8 in the super tiebreaker, coming within just two points of winning the First Singles Match. She will win many matches in her career at Pawling.
Sara Yurt won five games in her Second Singles Match, and Kristen McNamara won three games in her Third Singles Match, and both of them improve with each match.
Jenny Sosiewicz and Kate Demetri won the first set of their Second Doubles Match at 6-4, took the second set to extra games before losing 5-7, then easily won the super tiebreaker at 10-5 to give the Tigers their only team point in the match.
Sarah Gulbrandsen and Katie Rosaschi also pushed the match to the super tiebreaker, as the won the first set at 6-4, then lost the second set at 3-6. They lost in the super tiebreaker at 10-7, showing that they are on the verge of winning their matches and helping the Tigers get on that winning streak that is absolutely to begin very soon.
