Noah Fleischman leads Cub Bear Scouts in Study of Information and Communication

This article with the publication of Noah's description of the program in his own words is a part of the activity.

By John M. Benson
November 8, 2007

Noah Fleischman is a member of Bear Cub Scouts Den 2 in Boy Scout Pack 34 of Pawling.

The Bear Scouts work through a series of achievements on their way up through Scouting, and on November 1 in the Scout Cabin at the Smith Johnson Scout Reservation of Pawling, Noah organized the den in an evening of exercises and demonstrations as a study of Information and Communication.

As an element of the study of the work of a news reporter, Noah described the achievement and the program in his own words for the Harlem Valley Herald:

We are learning about information.

There are many ways we communicate facts to each other.

One way is to choose a TV show with an adult in your family and watch it together.

A second way is to play a game of charades at your den meeting or with your family at home.

A third way is to visit a newspaper office or a TV or radio station and talk to a news reporter.

A fourth way is to use a computer to get information. You can write, spell-check, proofread, and print out a report on what your learned.

A fifth way is to write a letter to a company that makes something you use. You can use e-mail or the U. S. Postal Service.

A sixth way is to talk with a parent or family member.

To help us with this, Mr. John Benson, a reporter for the Harlem Valley Herald website has helped us by talking to our troop. We enjoyed his presentation very much.

By Noah Fleischman

Noah arranged a series of stations at which his invited adult guests demonstrated the ways in which he said people share information, and played interactive games with the Cub Scouts to help communicate the message.

John Benson discussed the role of the news reporter at one station, Steven Fleischman showed the boys how to send and receive emails and do research on the computer, Bianca Fleischman showed the kids how to write a letter, while others did charades to demonstrate communication without words, and yet others showed various other ways in which Noah said people share information.
