JAZZ UP your November 4th! How do you jazz up the classics?

The Litchfield Jazz Festival will show you how -- when it presents the nonprofit Sherman Chamber Ensemble (SCE) at the Litchfield Community Center on Sunday, November 3rd.

The Litchfield Jazz Festival presents the Sherman Chamber Ensemble with headliner pianist Ted Rosenthal, an acclaimed jazz pianist (first prize winner in the 2nd Annual Thelonius Monk International Jazz Competition).  He will be joined by SCE co-founders Eliot Bailen (cello) and Susan Rotholz (flute), along with rising young bass player Thomson Kneeland and veteran session musician Chris Parker on drums.

The afternoon's offerings of the Sherman Chamber Ensemble, now celebrating its 25th Anniversary, will include a tribute to the late saxophonist Benny Carter on the centennial of his birth; jazz-inspired selections by Astor Piazzolla, and Rosenthal's signature improvisations on the work of classical masters such as Mozart.

The Sherman Chamber Ensemble, celebrating its 25th Anniversary this 2007, brings world-class musicians to our communities and schools to perform a diverse range of music with an approach that is both intimate and inclusive.

Eliot Bailen, artistic director and founder of the Sherman Chamber Ensemble founded the Sherman Chamber Ensemble in 1983 with his wife, flutist Susan Rotholz.

SCE offers a year-round schedule of more than a dozen performances for all ages in a variety of venues.

SCE also holds children’s song-writing workshops in partnership with local elementary schools.

A winner in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, Mr. Bailen has gained national attention as a writer and producer of children’s music.  He received his Doctor of Musical Arts from the Yale School of Music.
