Pawling Triathlon: Rand, Mayette, Lewick, Musella place in category top five
Rand, Mayette finish first among local triathletes

June 4, 2007
Under magnificent blue skies and gentle breezes on a spring day in picturesque Lakeside Park in Pawling last Saturday, June 2, the 20th Annual Pawling Triathlon was a terrific event made possible by a truly remarkable display of cooperation among all aspects of the Pawling community.
With the proceeds to benefit the Pawling Teen Center, the groups that came together included nearly 200 volunteers of all ages before and on the day of the event, the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, the Village of Pawling, the Town of Pawling, the Triathlon Committee, the Pawling Recreation Department, the Pawling Town Constables, the New York Triathlon Club, and Platt Timing Systems.
With some 575 athletes signed up for the event, more than 500 turned out on race day to be met with an impeccably clean park, efficient race administration, and nearly 200 friendly volunteers of all ages to make the experience enjoyable.
Pawling Triathlon Committee Chairman Jim Boyle, Town Supervisor Beth Coursen and New York Triathlon Club spokesman Dan Honig greeted the competitors and spectators, and Betty Gallagher led the throng in the singing of the National Anthem.
Pawling is always well-represented among the triathletes, and this year was no exception.
Suzanne Mayette was the leading finisher among the ladies for Pawling with a 71st place among all competitors, with Mac Rand the top finisher among the men for Pawling with a 37th place finish overall.
Joanna Lewick was top finisher in an age group for Pawling, earning a plaque for her third place finish in the Female 30-34 Class. She finished in the 146th place overall.
Corinne Musella (148th) was fourth in the Female 30-34 Class, Suzanne Mayette (71st) was fourth in the Female 40-44 Class, and Mac Rand (37th) was fourth in the Male 50-54 Class.

Rob Kelley of Pawling Cycle & Sport, Brian Griffin and the other Pawling competitors are organizing a triathlon team from Pawling to travel to events in the Northeastern United States. Many of them wore the new Pawling Triathlon Club shirts in the triathlon race on Saturday (see the photos of Brian Griffin and Erica Lawlor in the attached Photo Gallery).
Recreation Director Melissa Smith, her assistant Robyn Woolley, Bob Van Keuren, Dave Orser and Betty Hayner at Pawling Recreation have once again done a remarkable job in the planning of the event and the preparation of the incredible Lakeside Park. Smith and Woolley are also members of the Pawling Triathlon Committee, which provides both the committee and the town with an essential point of cooperation that is critical to the success of the Pawling Triathlon.
Jim Boyle is the chairman of the Pawling Triathlon Committee this year. Boyle began volunteering for the Pawling Triathlon 13 years ago, and has served as a member of the Committee for ten years. The other Committee members are Smith and Woolley, past chairman Ross Nichols, Chris Burke, John Daley, John Daniels, Ross Daniels, Keir Donaldson, Ann Godesky, Rob Kelley, Sergeant Frank Lamonica, Tyler Maile, Pete Muroski, Doug Warren, Everett White, and Daniel Honig of the New York Triathlon Club.
Jim Boyle was lavish in his praise of everyone in the community, every individual, group and local business that helped to organize the event, helped to bring it off on Saturday, and donated to the cause of the Triathlon and the Pawling Teen Center.
As Boyle said after this year’s triathlon, “Working with Recreation Director Melissa Smith and Robyn Woolley is a great pleasure, and they are also both members of the Triathlon Committee. They are there with every kind of help that we need, and their participation is essential to the staging of this event. All of the people from the Town Recreation Department and the Town Highway Department made the park look great and had it ready for this event, and we just couldn’t be more grateful for all they do for the triathlon.
“We really want to thank Town Supervisor Beth Coursen and Village Mayor Rob Liffland for their assistance and cooperation. Everybody who came to this event had a very positive experience, and that is very much a result of the cooperation we received from the village and the town. Without the blessing and the cooperation of Beth Coursen and Rob Liffland, this event simply would not be possible. I have nothing but positive things to say about both of them and the Pawling Triathlon.
“Sergeant Frank Lamonica of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office has been working with the Triathlon Committee for more than ten years, and we get tremendous support and assistance from them. They are out on the roads, the running course and the bike course, controlling traffic and making sure it is a safe event for the competitors and the spectators. They patrol in the village and in the town, and escort the competitors, and close intersections where that is needed. The Sheriffs also have their diving team and rescue boat on the lake, and that provides us with a tremendous measure of safety and security.
“John Daley is a member of the committee, and he is the Chief Constable of the Town of Pawling. He does a great job in charge of parking and coordinating things with the town and working with the Sheriff’s Office on safety and security. His Pawling Town Constables do a great job the day of the event with crowd control and traffic and parking control. They are there the first thing in the morning, and they stay and keep everything organized all day. Participants and the spectators were able to get into the park and get settled and get to the event easily, and that is a credit to the Town Constables.
“The entire Triathlon Committee is really phenomenal. I was the chairman of the committee this year, and believe me, being the chairman is probably the easiest job in the world. Everybody on the committee has a specialty or area of expertise, from registration to organizing volunteers to fund raising, and everyone one of them does that job with complete devotion. We have representatives of the village and the town on the committee, and the people on the committee do a fantastic job. As the chairman, I honestly felt I wasn’t doing anything because everybody handled their responsibility so well.
“I made it a point after the event as we were taking things down to see as many people as I could who had participated in the triathlon competition. I must have spoken to at least 50 people, and the feedback I got was that people had really enjoyed themselves. Most of them had run in the event before and would definitely come back again, and they all said they really enjoy the Pawling Triathlon.
“It did go very smoothly, and that is real credit to the volunteers and everyone involved in planning it. We had over 170 volunteers this year, in the park, along the bike course, along the run course all on the day of the event, plus all the people who give of their time in the organization and planning process prior to the event. Volunteers man everything from the registration to life guards to water stops, and it was really those many volunteers who made this event a success.
“The competitors all say that the volunteers do a great job and are very welcoming and helpful, and it really shows the community in a good light for those who come to Pawling from outside to compete in the Pawling Triathlon.
“We receive a donation of water from Pepsi of the Hudson Valley.
“We have a man from New York Triathlon Club, Dan Honig, who handles the entry process of the triathletes. They have it all web based and they do a great job. We asked them to come in and help, and they have been with us for the last four or five years. As the event grew over the years, we found that they have the infrastructure to really help us get everyone registered in advance of the event, and to help us get everyone signed in and organized the day of the event.
“The timer who works with us is Ken Platt, and his company is Platt Timing Systems. He does all the timing, and he uses the chips that make it all so much easier and more accurate. It is a great comfort to know that all of the times and place finishes are accurately and fully recorded. It makes the event run a lot smoother. Up until a few years ago it was all done manually, so this is a great help and helps to make it an enjoyable day.
“Everybody who was involved did a fantastic job. I think it really shows the community of Pawling, the village and the town altogether, in a very positive light. I talked to a number of people who came from Long Island, Westchester, Connecticut, and everyone had a very positive experience. The event turned out well, and it wasn’t by accident. Everybody worked together and that made the event a success. It is a credit to everyone involved, many of whom have volunteered for many years, and I think everybody enjoys what they do and the fact that it is for a good cause.
“It is for a great cause, because the event raises money for the Pawling Teen Center. We have a number of local businesses and individuals who make donations to the triathlon for the purpose of supporting the Teen Center. This community has always been very generous with their donations, and we are very grateful to them for supporting the Pawling Triathlon and Pawling Teen Center.”
