The 20th Annual Pawling Triathlon will be staged this Saturday, June 2, from 9 a.m. to 12:00 noon at Lakeside Park. The triathlon is a spectacular local success story, an important stop on the triathlon circuit in the Northeastern United States, and a demonstration of what the Pawling community can accomplish in staging a remarkable event of this proportion.
The Pawling community has made donations in excess of $10,000 so far this year, and with the number of entrants expanded to 575, proceeds from registration fees are up to $33,000 for this year.
The Pawling community provides absolutely essential support as volunteers for this event, with 175 volunteers working the triathlon last year. More volunteers are needed for this year, especially for water stops along the running and bike routes. For information, call the Recreation Department at 855-1131.

The proceeds from the Pawling Triathlon are used to benefit the Pawling Teen Center, a program of the Town of Pawling and Pawling Recreation Department that is administered by Recreation Director Melissa Smith and assistant Robyn Woolley.
The triathlon is organized by the Triathlon Management Team of Recreation Director Melissa Smith, Robyn Woolley, Robert VanKeuren and Laurie Lampert. This event is sponsored by the Town of Pawling, approved by Supervisor Beth Coursen and Councilmen Bill Johnson, Jim Benson, Mike Montemarano and Bob Marvin.
The Pawling Triathlon Committee administers the triathlon. The new chairman is Jim Boyle. Ross Nichols, past president, continues to be very active and is largely responsible for the very successful donations drive. Members of the committee include Daniel Honig of the New York Triathlon, Chris Burke, John Daley, John Daniels, Ross Daniels, Keir Donaldson, Ann Godesky, Rob Kelley, Sergeant Frank Lamonica, Tyler Maile, Pete Muroski, Doug Warren and Everett White.
Pawling resident Suzanne Mayette won the open women’s division two years ago, and she will be competing again this year. Also competing will be Pawling and Holmes residents Steven Flagg, Kelby Edwards, Jon Olsen, David Lates, Joseph DePaola, Robert Walters, Christine Walters, Christian McCarthy, Tamra McCarthy, Brian Griffin, Robert VanKeuren, Trish Arnold, Jeff Arnold, Elijah Hoffman, Vincent Nunziato, Christopher Lewick, Joanna Lewick, Elizabeth Fountaine, Raymond Henderson, Laurel Whitworth, Joe Downey, Brian DeNatale, Melissa Stahl-Downey, Susan Pieratti, Corinne Musella and Nedd Owen.
Please email the Harlem Valley Herald if I have left anyone out: harlemherald@optonline.net.
Competitors from neighboring communities include Robert Mascetta of Dover Plains, Karen Rossi of Millbrook, and Ron West of Amenia.
A field of 575 triathletes will compete in the one-third mile swim at Lakeside Park, and the 13-mild bike ride and the 3.1-mile run through the streets of the Village and Town of Pawling.
Motorists on the public roads are asked to proceed with extreme caution, and to yield the right of way to Triathlon athlete whenever permissible.
Lakeside Drive will be closed except for residents of that roadway from 8 a.m. to 12 noon, from Old Route 55 to Charles Colman Blvd. and West Dover Road between the hours of 8 a.m. and 12 noon.
Motorists are also advised that the following roadways will be staffed by Triathlon volunteers, and traffic will be limited to residents and local traffic from 8 a.m. to 12 noon: Holiday Street, Glenn Court, River Road, Rebecca Lane, Dodge Road, Kings Way, Blackberry Drive (Pawling Lake Estates), Hoags Corners, Orchard Street, Grandview Drive, Dykeman Street, Allison Drive, Union Street, Sheridan Drive, West Street, West Main Street and Dutcher Avenue.
