Mayor Rob Liffland and the Village Board have decided on the final design for the planned extension of the sidewalk on East Main Street.
The project is being funded by the $150,000 in the Community Development Block Grant that was obtained by the efforts of Liffland, the Village Board, and Village Clerk Jennifer Osborn.
The plans drawn by Stantech Consluting Services, Inc., show the sidewalk extending past the Dutcher Golf Course, across the triangle where the flagpole stands, and to the top of South Street.
The cut-off road that now leads on a diagonal from East Main Street to South Street will be dug up and removed, extending the lawn around the flagpole to the grass on the south side of that road.
Liffland and Trustees Tracy Durkin, Allen Rundall, Robert Murphy and Wayne Osborn said the cut-off roadway should be removed because it presently creates an unsafe traffic situation at the yield sign at South Street.
The new layout will accentuate the flagpole and dedication stone on the green, and the Welcome to Pawling sign with the symbols of the churches and service clubs of Pawling.
Liffland said that because this sidewalk project will extend to the top of South Street, it serves as a beginning on the eventual sidewalk project that will extend the length of South Street and back across Dutcher Avenue to connect those streets with the sidewalks throughout the rest of the village.
Liffland said further that this work is a continuation of the mission to make the village pedestrian friendly, as envisioned in the Pathway Project and the Village Comprehensive Plan.
Since the year 2000, the Village of Pawling has constructed sidewalks along East Main Street, up Coulter Avenue to Route 22, up Pine Drive from Route 22 to Kings Apartments, up Charles Cooman Boulevard from the village center to Lakeside Park, and up West Main Street connecting the village center with Murrow Park.
