Coach Rosanne Persico’s Webutuck Warriors, featuring a mixed roster of very skilled veterans and very brave and talented youth, allowed just one goal by the visiting Red Hook Raiders until midway through the second half.
Webutuck goalkeeper Britney Penz is really a superstar at her position, and with her solid group of defenders and the midfielders and forwards dropping back to help, the Warriors managed to hold off the Raider team that had the benefit of experience at every position.
The Warriors had their chances on goal, but a big and experienced back line for Red Hook thwarted their efforts.
The score was 1-0 at the half, and remained there until about midway through the second half, after which the Raiders poured in a succession of goals against a very tired Warrior team.
Webutuck Rosanne Persico admires the character and the contribution of her very skilled upperclassmen and the bravery, persistence and promise of her very young players, and knows that they are facing teams that simply have more players with experience.
Persico said after the Red Hook game, “The Webutuck Program has been extremely strong in the past, but with soccer moving to the fall season, we are struggling to stay afloat. We have a variety of skill levels. The seniors have played for six years, and the newcomers went right to the varsity level.
“Our record is 1 and 4. We beat FDR 4-2 with goals by Hannah Peters, Shannon Garvin, Meghan Schneider, and Maureen Boyd. Britney Pentz has been consistently strong in goal, and the “rookie” players continue to improve.
“This is a challenging experience for everyone involved, and they are handling it with pride, character, and a lot of integrity. Our philosophy this year is to never give up no matter what, and play hard every second we’re out there. We know success and a winning record is going to be difficult to achieve, but this experience will make these young athletes better people.”
The statewide decision to move girls’ soccer to the fall has been so hurtful to the young lady athletes in small schools, where the same girls often played both sports, that the decision defies explanation or justification.
