Coach Aaron Howard is pleased with the way the Webutuck Warriors are playing early in the season, and he and the players are determined to get into the sectional playoffs and win games this year.
Webutuck defeated Pawling 4-0 in the opening game of the Dover Dragon Friendship Boys’ Soccer Tournament on Friday, September 14, working the ball well as a team and taking advantage of their scoring opportunities.
Coach Howard said after the game, “We played well today, but there are a few things we need to do better. A few times out there we were bunching up, too many guys at the ball, which leaves the other team’s guys open.
“The kids and I expect to do well this year, and for our five seniors who have played together for so long, this is the last chance to get it done. Our seniors are Chris Matteo, Marco Reyes, Cody Cafiero, T. J. Murphy and Derek Lind. Overall, we did well today, and we are looking forward to the rest of the season. We lost our first game in sectionals last year, but this team returns a lot of experience, and these kids expect to do well.
“We lost only two guys from last year. This year we have five seniors. Most of these guys have played together for years in the Youth Soccer League in Amenia. They are very coach-able in that way, because they know the game, and they know each other. We have to work more on getting to an open spot, but we are doing well early in the season, and we will continue to improve.”
Playing a 4-4-2, Howard starts forwards Marco Reyes and Cody Cafiero, mdfielders Chris Matteo, Mike Schneider, Pat McCaffrey and Alex Murphy, and defenders are Derek Lind, Jimmy Robertson, Justin Giordano and Andrew Watson. The keeper is Zach Spencer.
The remainder of the roster includes Joseph Lopane, P. J. Murphy, Ryan Andrada, Jesse Fretwell, Connor Lynch and Justin Lind.
“Chris Matteo controls my midfield for me, and he had one goal and two assists today, so he had a very good day,” Howard said. “My defense worked very well today against Pawling, so they were able to get the ball up to my offense to score. That is our strong point, our defense."
On the scoring, Howard said, “Cody Cafiero scored the first goal 31 minutes into the first half, so the score was 1-0 at the end of the first half. Chris Matteo scored our second goal, with the assist from Jimmy Robertson, just 51 seconds into the second half to make it 2-0. Patrick McCaffrey scored the third goal on an assist from Matteo, and Murphy scored the final goal to make it 4-0, again on an assist from Chris Matteo.”
