Story By Serena Fleischman

The Cats Meow

It was 1985, and a crisp fall day in Salem, Massachusetts. Madison Goodwin was excited to have a sleep over that night with Natalie, her best friend and  because of her mother’s insistence, Mallory; the meanest person you could ever meet. “Ding-Dong.”  It was Natalie and Mallory who was hauling a large sack that peaked her curiosity. “What’s in the bag? questioned Madison. “None of your business Goodwin” snarled Mallory. and she bolted up the steps into Madison’s room and slammed the door. The two girls looked at each other  befuddled and ran up the steps too. Mallory was on the floor chanting wildly. “What are you doing?” asked Natalie “Don’t worry, I’m looking to turn our popular friend Chloe into a feline!” shouted Mallory. “What” shrieked Madison, “You can’t.” Mallory replied knowingly, “Too late. With this spell, it’s done,”  and she locked herself in the closet with the book. Panic-stricken the girls knew they had to reverse it.  The doorbell rang and Madison rushed to get it. “Who’s there?” she asked and no one answered. She opened the door and a cat purred at her feet. “ Chloe?” she asked and brought the cat  upstairs.  She had to get the book back and reverse the spell. She jimmied the door open with a hanger and  tussled with Mallory. They searched frantically for a reversal, but inadvertently read one that turned the meanest person in the house into a mouse.  A riot broke out with Chloe the cat chasing  Mallory; the  mouse. They ran out of the house through a window into the darkness. The found the spell and turned Chloe back to normal, but not Mallory. Later, Chloe came back into the house as good as new; no longer a cat. “Do you want something to eat Chloe?” asked Madison. “I had a little snack.”
